This page is part of APRA’s “Know Your Neighbourhood” initiative and aims to encourage residents of Auckland Park to explore their own, and neighbouring, suburbs.
Out and about (1): Take a walk to the top of Brixton hill and enjoy the view of the whole city from Kingston Frost Park. On a clear day, you can see beyond Sandton. See you up there!
Out and about (2): Visit the extraordinary Lindfield House Victorian Museum in 72 Richmond Ave in Auckland Park. Visits are by appointment only and include a guided tour as well as a Victorian tea. The owner, Katharine Love, has a wealth of knowledge about the early history of Auckland Park and Victorian objects that are crammed into the Museum’s many rooms. Read more about the museum here.
Out and about (3): Take a tour of the SABC. “Tours introduce visitors to the world of broadcasting, thus giving the public from all walks of life a rare chance of witnessing the day-to-day activities that keep our radio stations and TV channels on air, and showcase our vast network of operations that make all of this possible.”
Contact the Tours Office on 011 714 3744 or email Yvonne van Heerden at firstname.lastname@example.org. Adults R35, concessions for students etc.
Out and about (4): Religious institutions in Auckland Park and Brixton
Out and about (5): “Second Saturdays” is an APRA initiative where residents clean up the suburb on a monthly basis. This is sometimes done in collaboration with the Brixton Community Forum, when the focus is the Kingston Frost Park, which straddles both suburbs. PikitUp provides skips and rubbish bags for these events, which are sometimes also supported by University of Johannesburg community service students. Click here for current details.
